I personally think Hel Looks is a pretty interesting look into the everyday fashion of people who actually pay attention to, or overthink their clothing. Some people in Finland find the blog a bit outlandish and alienating though. This of course relates to Finland not being particularly urban.

Finland was an agrarian economy until the sixties but has since been suburbanized in a way that may be more comparable to country living and less tragically cartoonish than suburbs in more densely populated countries. For outsiders in the suburbs, there may be something quite easily ridiculed in the eagerness to build an urban identity in the few urban areas of Finland.

One of several Hel Looks parodies and spinoffs started from a perspective that’s more close to the Finnish population at large. Lande Looks (Rural Looks) takes a frank look at the ordinary, comfy and care free attitude of the inhabitants of the big, sprawling outback that is post-war Finland.

Another, more urban spin-off is operated by Varusteleka, an army outlet retail store known for their viral home grown marketing. Leka Looks documents the style ideas of people who prefer to build visually pleasing outfits off of the rugged and practical.

Those of you who are artists, or who consider themselves as creative, is your self-confidence burdened by the feeling that you’re a fraud, only copying works that have been invented before?

Don’t worry, no one has ever had a truly novel idea. Even Thomas Edison.

Everything is a Remix, a short series by filmmaker Kirby Ferguson, presents influence and appropiation as an integral part of human creativity. Spanning from Led Zeppelin to George Lucas and from Johannes Gutenberg to Xerox, the series explains in exhausting detail how progress is based on mutations and combinations of pre-existing works.

Another important video in the theme is Nate Harrison’s story about a drum beat called Amen Break, certainly the most remixed sample in music history, which tells several essential details of musical development after the 70′s and insights about the vague border between appropiation and creation.

In the words of Alex Kozinski, “Nothing today, likely nothing since we tamed fire, is genuinely new”.

This month, Fermilab technicians and Dark Energy Survey collaborators installed the last of 62 science-quality charged coupling devices, or CCD’s, into the imager for the Dark Energy Camera [called DECam] currently housed at SiDet. CCDs work like film, and each one contains 8 million pixels. The camera also has another 12 CCDs of 4 million pixels each for guiding and focusing. The imager will head to Chile in mid-August for installation on the Blanco telescope. DES collaborators in Chile just finished installing the off-telescope components of the DECam imager liquid-nitrogen cooling system in preparation for the camera’s arrival. Large in size and scope, it portrays a world far beyond the one beneath our feet and reveals our familiar Milky Way with unfamiliar clarity.

Nick Risinger has made a brilliant job of unprecedented scale, capturing the depths of our home galaxy from our perspective on Earth. We usually see images of stars and nebulas only from their “portraits”, but now it is possible to locate them in a vast landscape which is encircling us, and which defines the location of our existence.

American: The Bill Hicks Story (imdb) is a fine, must see documentary for all comedy fans and People of Counterculture. The movie shows us a man who during his own lifetime lived and breathed relentless dedication to speaking hurtful truths to barely receptive small-town comedy club audiences, but was privileged enough to witness the early days of his persona’s journey towards cult-like status.

You can buy your own copy or rent a stream (HD quality available) on the film’s site. A 720p copy can be downloaded illegally over bittorrent.

The documentary is definitely worth its weight in HD bandwidth thanks to a ton of gorgeous animations made from photo cutouts. Lazy, white-trash Finnish fans might however enjoy the free, subtitled low-res copy of the movie on The Finnish Broadcasting Company’s Areena streaming site (25 days of geographically restricted availability left at the time of posting).
